Roaming Is a Client Decision
Access points can encourage and assist roaming, but the client device ultimately decides when to leave one AP and join another. Poor AP placement, excessive transmit power and overlapping coverage can make a client stay attached to a distant AP longer than expected.
Common Causes
- APs too far apart or too close together
- Transmit power set too high
- Inconsistent SSID/security configuration
- Weak wired uplink on one AP
- Client drivers or device behavior
- Channel/interference problems that look like roaming problems
Measure Before Tuning
Check which AP the client is using, received signal, channel utilization, retry rate and whether the problem follows one AP or one client type. Avoid changing many radio settings at once.
