Why Your Network Feels Slow Even With Fast Internet

Internet Speed and Network Performance Are Different

A speed test at the gateway can show hundreds of megabits or more while users still experience slow browsing, calls, uploads or roaming. The bottleneck may be inside the property rather than at the ISP.

Common Internal Causes

  • Poor access-point placement or weak signal at the client
  • Too many clients concentrated on one AP
  • Wireless mesh uplinks where wired backhaul is available
  • Interference or overly wide channels
  • Damaged cabling or a port negotiating below expected speed
  • High latency, packet loss or DNS problems
  • Slow client devices or outdated client drivers
  • Broadcast-heavy or poorly segmented networks

Test in Layers

Compare a wired test at the gateway, a wired test at the affected switch, a wireless test close to the AP and a test at the problem location. This narrows the issue to the ISP, switching/cabling, radio layer or client.

For persistent problems, see remote troubleshooting or request an on-site network assessment in Virginia or North Carolina.
