Design Guest Wi-Fi Around Capacity, Not Just Signal
A hotel can show strong signal in every hallway and still provide a poor guest experience if too many rooms share one access point, uplinks are constrained, or guest traffic competes with operational systems.
Core Design Questions
- How many rooms and floors are in each building?
- What are the wall and floor materials?
- Where are network closets and wired pathways?
- How many guest devices should be expected per occupied room?
- Are APs serving rooms from corridors, rooms, ceilings or mixed locations?
- Are switches and uplinks sized for the combined traffic?
Separate Guest Traffic
Guest devices should not share the same trusted network as front-desk computers, cameras, locks or management systems. Segmentation reduces unnecessary exposure and makes troubleshooting easier.
Use Wired Backhaul Where Practical
Wireless meshing can be useful in specific situations, but a wired AP connection is usually more predictable for hotel capacity. Building-to-building backbones should be evaluated separately from room coverage.
