Why a UniFi Device May Not Adopt
Adoption failures usually come down to reachability, controller ownership, stale configuration, software compatibility or a device that still belongs to another site. Avoid immediately factory-resetting equipment until you know whether the existing configuration or credentials are needed.
Start With These Checks
- Confirm the device has power and an active Ethernet link.
- Confirm it received an IP address from the expected network.
- Verify the gateway/controller and device can reach each other.
- Check whether the device appears as pending adoption, managed by another console or offline.
- Confirm the controller and device software are reasonably current and compatible.
- If the device came from another site, determine whether it should be removed/migrated there first.
When a Reset Makes Sense
A factory reset can be appropriate for a device with no configuration you need to preserve and when ownership of the prior controller is not required. For production switches, gateways or remote sites, plan the reset carefully because connectivity may be lost.
Still Stuck?
If the device has valid network connectivity but adoption still fails, remote UniFi support can help review the controller, IP addressing and adoption state.
