How to Prepare a Network for More Security Cameras

Adding cameras affects switch ports, PoE capacity, storage, uplinks, and network organization.

Count more than camera ports

Each new camera uses a switch port, PoE power, cable path, recorder channel, storage capacity, and network bandwidth. Expansion planning should consider all of these resources rather than only whether an open Ethernet port exists.

Calculate PoE headroom

Review each camera’s maximum power requirement and the switch’s total PoE budget. Leave headroom for startup behavior, future devices, and equipment changes. If cameras are spread across a property, additional edge switches may be more practical than returning every cable to one location.

Evaluate uplinks

A switch serving many high-resolution cameras needs an appropriate uplink to the recorder or core network. Traffic patterns depend on whether streams are viewed locally, recorded centrally, or accessed remotely. Avoid creating a single congested wireless or low-speed link.

Expand storage intentionally

Estimate retention after the new cameras are added. Higher resolution, frame rates, and continuous recording consume more storage. Confirm drive compatibility, recorder limits, redundancy needs, and how exported evidence will be handled.

Plan cabling and mounting

Identify pathways, exterior penetrations, weatherproof boxes, lifts, conduit, surge protection, and lighting conditions. Test proposed views before final mounting. A camera should be positioned to capture useful detail, not simply the widest area.

Update security and documentation

Add new cameras to the correct network segment, restrict administrative access, update device names and diagrams, and document cable and switch-port assignments. Verify that alerts and time settings are correct.
