When to Use Cat6, Cat6A, or Fiber

Choose cabling based on distance, speed, environment, pathway, equipment, and long-term plans.

Cat6 fits many common runs

Cat6 is widely used for access points, cameras, phones, workstations, and other standard Ethernet endpoints. It supports common network speeds within applicable distance and installation limits and is generally easier to route and terminate than Cat6A.

Cat6A provides additional margin

Cat6A is designed for higher performance over the full standard channel distance and can be useful for demanding links, future capacity, and environments where alien crosstalk control is important. It is larger, stiffer, and usually more expensive, so pathways and terminations must be planned accordingly.

Fiber excels at distance and building links

Fiber supports long distances, high bandwidth, electrical isolation, and resistance to electromagnetic interference. It is usually preferred between buildings and for network backbones. The design must specify fiber type, strand count, connectors, transceivers, enclosure, and testing.

PoE requires copper

Standard fiber does not carry endpoint power. Access points, cameras, and phones commonly use copper Ethernet from a PoE switch. A design may use fiber to an intermediate switch and copper for the final device connections.

Environment changes the answer

Outdoor exposure, conduit fill, electrical interference, fire-rating requirements, flexing, heat, and physical protection all affect cable selection. Use cable listed for the environment and follow applicable code.

Design the whole channel

Performance depends on cable, patch panels, jacks, patch cords, installation quality, and testing. Buying a higher category cable alone does not guarantee a higher-performing link.
