Planning Network Coverage for a Multi-Story Home

A practical approach to access-point placement, cabling, and coverage planning in larger homes.

Do not design by square footage alone

Two homes with the same size can behave very differently. Floor construction, masonry, metal ductwork, mirrors, appliances, radiant barriers, and room layout all affect wireless performance. A plan should consider where people use devices and which areas need dependable capacity, not only where a signal can be detected.

Use multiple moderate-power access points

One access point at maximum power is rarely the best solution for a large home. Several correctly placed access points can provide more consistent coverage and better client capacity. Placement should favor occupied areas and avoid hiding equipment inside cabinets, behind televisions, or near large metal objects.

Wire the access points

Ethernet backhaul gives each access point a stable path to the network. It also allows the switch to provide power through PoE. Wireless mesh may be useful where cabling is impossible, but it should be treated as a compromise and tested under realistic load.

Plan for outdoor and specialty areas

Porches, pools, detached garages, workshops, home offices, theaters, and smart-home panels may need dedicated coverage or wired connections. Outdoor equipment should be selected and mounted for the environment, with proper surge and grounding considerations.

Tune after installation

The installation is not complete when the access points power on. Channel selection, channel width, transmit power, roaming behavior, and minimum data-rate settings may need adjustment. Client tests should be performed in real-use areas, including voice calls, video meetings, streaming, and security-camera viewing.

Leave room for future expansion

Provide spare switch ports, rack space, cable pathways, and controller capacity. Homes continue to add cameras, smart devices, work-from-home systems, and higher-speed internet. A little planning now can avoid disruptive rewiring later.
